I read an interesting article today that suggested there is a connection between children’s use of swimming pools and asthma. You can read the full article here. It’s dated July 2006 and I couldn’t find any follow ups but I thought it was intersting none the less.

A study, by the Catholic University of Louvain, in Belgium, found that the rates of asthma in children rose by about 2 to 3% for every indoor swimming pool per 100,000 people and concluded that this was due to increased exposure to chlorine which is used to clean the pools.

 

They’d produced evidence a few years earlier that found that chlorine in swimming pools can react with urine and sweat resulting in the creation of harmful fumes. Children who regularly went swimming in indoor pools accumulated proteins known, in large quantities, to damage the cells of the lungs.

In the more recent study which was conducted across 21 countries in Europe they found that wheezing, asthma, hay fever and other reactions were increased.

The recommendations are to ensure that pools are properly ventilated and that chlorine levels are kept to the minimum level necessary to ensure clean, safe water. Something bear in mind with your own swimming pool.

Well after buying a number of new games for the pool I’ve been really disappointed to find that, due to the poor weather, we haven’t made much use of them. I was all fired up for playing with the kids and the new water polo set.

I suppose there’s always the chance that the temperature will improve but I don’t hold out too much hope. The only good side is it’s been a great excuse to stay in and watch the Olympics. Go Phelps! The kids are really inspired.

I always encourage my daughter to play outdoors and now we’ve got a new above ground pool set it’s even easier. It’s great for her and there are endless child activities to take advantage of. I enjoy getting in with her and her friends, teaching them new things and showing them how I used to have a great time when I was a child, without video games and non-stop television.

I still enjoy the swimming pool games I loved as a child and teenager and it’s fun passing them on to my daughter.

We were very much an outdoor kind of family. My father taught me how to shoot a bow, build a campfire, throw tomahawks, and go canoeing. As you can see, I grew up in the country. I carry some of this over into my parenting. My daughter was more than excited when I taught her how to shoot a bow and build a decent fire. She enjoys playing horse shoes as I did when I was her age. These are simple child activities that I have the power to teach her. Trust me; it’s not difficult to get your little ones excited about things when they’re young. Mostly what they crave is time with you. Take advantage of this and devote some free time each day or week to your child’s fun. They will always remember it.
